What Foods Are Low Carb? The Answer Might Surprise You!

ANY food can be low carb if it falls within your carbohydrate goal. This includes a teeny-tiny (50 gm) sliver of unfrosted chocolate cake that contains ~26 grams of total carbs. This includes four teaspoons of sugar that contain ~21 grams of total carbs. Of course, those would be the ONLY carbs you could eat, if you were trying to stay around 20 total carbs per day.

The bigger elephant in the room is the addictive quality of cake, sugar and other high-carb foods.

Who can eat a teeny-tiny sliver of cake, walk away and never think about it again? For me, I can't even eat one slice of bread and walk away. I can never bring bread home, even low-carb bread, but I CAN eat a hot dog with the bun or one slice of toast away from home, and be just fine with that. Regardless, I still make that choice very rarely... once every six weeks or so. Maybe one day I will have control over my bread addiction to the point where bread no longer "calls" to me, but that time has not arrived yet.

On the other hand, I have discovered that, even at home, I CAN eat half a medium potato (~22 gm of cabs) or half a cup of white rice (~23 gms of carbs), walk away and never think about it again. Also, I discovered that I could be quite happy making that my ONLY source of carbs for the day. Neither potatoes nor white rice cause me gut problems, unlike many vegetables, like cabbage, cauliflower, etc. And, since potatoes and white rice don't "call" to me, the desire to eat them every day or pig out on them just isn't there. Therefore, for me, these carbs can add some variety and interest to my meals without affecting my blood sugar, weight or gut issues! That's a win!

UPDATE: I also discovered that I can eat 20 total gm of parsnips without any gut issues and parsnips don't call to me, so another win!
