Low Carb Snacks

If you typically eat one or two high-protein, low-carb meals a day, you probably don't need to snack very often. Nevertheless, in my limited experience, snacking is almost inevitable. So, when you do choose to snack, what you choose to snack on becomes very important.

Animal protein is your best choice:

  • cold steak
  • hard-boiled eggs
  • egg bites, mini quiches
  • rotisserie chicken
  • chicken wings
  • cold pork chops
  • meatballs
  • deli meats (salami, pepperoni, etc.)
  • ham
  • Chomps - beef sausage sticks
  • jerky
  • biltong
  • corned beef
  • luncheon meat
  • bacon
  • sausages
  • tuna
  • salmon
  • smoked salmon
  • shrimp/prawns
  • mackerel
  • sardines
  • pork rinds
  • crispy chicken skin
  • crispy salmon skin
  • meat crisps
  • meat bars

Nuts: these could slow down weightloss. They might be okay on maintenance:

  • pili nuts
  • macadamia nuts
  • pecans
  • Brazil nuts
  • walnuts
  • peanut butter
  • unsweetened coconut chips

Chocolate:

  • 85-90% dark chocolate (1-2 squares)

Dairy: often slows down weightloss, so be careful.

  • cheese
  • string cheese
  • halloumi cheese
  • goat cheese
  • cheese crisps
  • high-fat yogurt
  • high-fat cottage cheese
  • cream cheese
  • whipping cream

Low-carb veggies:

  • celery
  • cucumber
  • mushrooms
  • edamame
  • kale chips
  • salad veggies
  • seaweed sheets
  • dill pickles
  • bell peppers

Low-carb fruit: risky, so eat it occasionally and in small amounts only:

  • blueberries
  • blackberries
  • raspberries
  • strawberries
  • pomegranate seeds
  • fresh or frozen cranberries (unsweetened)

Miscellaneous foods:

  • avocado
  • guacamole
  • olives

Other ideas:

  • leftovers
  • roll-ups
  • lettuce wraps
  • devilled eggs
  • celery spread with peanut butter, cream cheese, goat cheese, liver pâté

Beverages:

  • water (hunger is often mistaken for thirst)
  • bone broth
  • bouillon
  • black coffee/tea (can add 1T butter, ghee, coconut oil)
  • green tea
  • herbal tea
  • sparkling water
  • limeade
